Tour of Howard Elementary School followed by a tour of the CTE Addition to Fremont High School. The FPS CTE is a 34,000 SF, single story addition to the existing high school. The exterior envelope is constructed with pre-cast concrete and storefront/curtainwall. It was designed to provide a unique community facing CTE facility that stimulates collaboration and creates student interest in the career pathways provided within the facility. The Fremont Elementary school project consists of three site adapted schools in neighborhood sites. The buildings are 72,000 SF each, type IIB construction, and will serve up to a maximum of 525 students in the future. An important goal of the project was to maintain the existing neighborhood schools that are central to the communities they serve. Each school consists of 4 sections of Kindergarten through 4th grade, along with 2 sections of Pre-K. The buildings were designed to exceed current student counts, with the intent that these buildings will be able to properly serve the community for another 75 years. The building is broken down into pods serving two grades each. The pods contain a large activity space, along with multiple break out spaces for smaller groups and specialized learning. A main design goal is to allow students to remain within their pod areas to reduce both the travel time/distance, as well as the stigma of students having to leave their friends to go to a specialized learning area.

Learning Objectives:
  • Learn how spaces can be designed to cultivate teamwork and communication skills through group projects, labs, and interactive learning experiences required in Career Pathways Education. Understand the value of bringing specialized learning environments to elementary classroom pod areas to avoid lengthy travel distances and reduce the stigma of students having to leave their peers Consider the option of maintaining neighborhood identity by designing new, equitable schools on existing sites.
  • Discuss design options that reduce the scale of large education facilities both to improve student experience and fit into the neighborhood context.
