WASHINGTON, DC – Edward J. Peters, ALEP is the recipient of the 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award, presented at the recent Association for Learning Environments LearningSCAPES conference. This award, the highest and most prestigious honor conferred by the Association to an individual, is designed to honor a member who has distinguished themselves by making significant lasting contributions to the educational facility planning industry throughout their illustrious career.

Philip Idle, Past-Chair of the Association and Chairman of the jury remarked, “The jury was impressed at the way Ed has been a champion in seeking a deeper understanding of social and cognitive behavioral research, with a professional passion for connecting evolving academic research in environmental psychology and neuroscience. He has presented at numerous conference, contributed articles and conducted numerous seminars.”

Since beginning his career in educational planning in 1988, Ed has empowered engagement in community participation through his body of work over many years, from Director of Facilities and Maintenance for the Mount Vernon School District, to becoming the Capital Projects Director at the Edmonds School District. Some of his celebrated projects include the 2010 MacConnell Award winners, Lynwood High School where his visioning process delved in to linking social space with learning opportunities. Also a finalist in the same year, Meadowdale Middle School explored the unique developmental needs of the adolescent learner through supporting various learning models appropriate to current thinking on teaching and learning. His role with the Edmonds School District has been heavily involved in master-planning and bond proposals, focused on the replacement of many dilapidated schools.

Ed’s advocacy of comprehensive planning process exemplifies A4LE’s strong culture and vision of continuously improving the planning and design of learning environments. His leadership has seen Ed serve as Washington State Chapter President, as an ALEP Commissioner, as Chapter Governor for many years and as a multiple recipient of the Pacific North West region Lifetime Achievement Award.
