St. Austin Catholic Church & School
2026 Guadalupe Street
Austin, TX 78705

St. Austin Catholic School Vertical School in an Urban Area: How a focus on safety and wellness along with the site itself informed the site design and building design of this vertical PK-8 school on a mixed-use site in an urban area.

  • Introduction to the project. Overview of the team (owners, program manager, developer, designers, contractor). Overview of the urban project site across the street from the University of Texas Austin and multi-use facility (church, school, parking garage, university housing, rectory, shared outdoor spaces, public alley). Story of how the project came to be.
  • Planning for safety and security is always of special concern when designing a facility for children. The building layout and technology worked together in a very intentional way to address the unique safety challenges of a multi-level, multi-use facility in an urban area.
  • Outdoor spaces are an integral part of St. Austin’s program for fitness, academics, and mental health. Outdoor spaces contribute to the health and wellness of its occupants. How St. Austin integrated meaningful outdoor areas and outdoor connections in a vertical school.
  • How the urban site helped inform the design of this school – from the safety challenges of incorporating an urban alley with a skybridge above with a 29-story residential tower for university students and a church that opens its doors to the homeless – all within a footprint that 2 inches away from the property line.

The University of Texas

J. Dan Brown Player Development Facility
DLR Group’s design of this new 23,000sf indoor baseball training facility for the University of Texas allows the Longhorns to take the development of their student-athletes to a higher level just steps away from their home playing field. The addition includes an indoor three lane pitching lab featuring Trackman ball-tracking technology and an adjacent video room to analyze film in a matter of seconds. The 6,000 SF hitting facility is home to three oversized batting cages with retractable netting for ultimate flexibility. A weight room and cardio mezzanine more than triples the size of the previous baseball weight room. Office space on the upper mezzanine level accommodates team offices and provides a unique perspective for players and coaches to view practice activities below, and into the stadium to the north. The building includes an alumni/umpire locker room, and a nutrition bar inside the weight room for players to recharge their bodies (and their phones),and serves as an additional social space within the facility. A central circulation spine running the length of the facility is key to the recruiting path that celebrates the program’s history and tradition while showcasing the amenities that allow present and future players to reach their maximum potential.

DLR Group provided programming, architecture, and interiors in association with O'Connell Robertson engineering and construction administration. The project was constructed by The Burt Group.

Softball Player Development Facility
Connected directly to Red and Charline McCombs Field, the new 18,000 sf player development facility provides a modern front door for the softball program. The two-story lobby atrium welcomes visitors with multiple “Instagram moments” allowing them to commemorate their visit surrounded by the legacy and history of the storied Longhorn softball program. Student-athletes are able to conduct their day-to-day activities year-round in the new locker room, player lounge, team classroom, hitting tunnels, and athletic medicine areas which can all be accessed directly from the playing field. Coaches and staff inhabit offices, meeting spaces, equipment, and laundry facilities surrounding the team spaces fostering camaraderie and a family atmosphere.

DLR Group provided programming, architecture, and interiors in association with O'Connell Robertson engineering and construction administration. The project was constructed by DPR.

Austin Community College's Rio Grande Campus
816 W 12th Street, Austin, TX 78701

Austin Community College's Rio Grande Campus, a beloved historic landmark, endured decades of deferred maintenance and incremental renovations. Dark, disconnected spaces, inaccessibility, and outdated systems prevented ACC Rio Grande from providing quality, affordable community education. Through a human-centered approach to sustainability and design, the 19th-century campus was reimagined for 21st-century learning. Transforming two interior light wells into atria became critical to the building's reorganization and circulation. Capped with a translucent ETFE roof system, sunlight fills the now-conditioned atria spaces. The central engine of the campus is a Army Futures Command Center, a 169-seat Accelerator Lab and library, surrounded by six high-tech science labs, classrooms for Gallaudet University's deaf and hard-of-hearing students, a cafeteria, and study areas for an activated, mixed-use campus. Restored arched windows offer panoramic views of Austin. The 108-year-old building has transformed into an accessible, LEED Platinum campus that inspires, educates, enriches, and prepares students of diverse backgrounds and abilities for the future.

Activating “Space” for Place-Based Learning and Holistic Wellbeing
1.5 LU Credit

When the spaces we inhabit are endowed with meaning and support our needs, they become emotionally connected places of significance that provide opportunities for growth and connection, and support wellbeing. The sensory and cognitive experience of engaging with “place” evolves as children develop, making the activation of “place” in their education and alignment between a child’s development and their learning environment an opportunity for thoughtful design to enhance connection and support exploration, engagement, belongingness, and holistic wellbeing. Situated in the hill country, the design of Cypress Springs Elementary in Dripping Springs ISD connects students to the natural landscape and provides a beneficial sense of “place” to support students’ growth and overall educational experience. This presentation will connect research-based insights from place attachment theory and the place-based learning model with the design to explore the ways in which design can activate “place” in education for learning and wellbeing.

Learning Objectives:
  • Develop an understanding of place attachment theory and the significance of cognitive-emotional person-place bonds in school facilities for supporting wellbeing.
  • Explore place-based learning and the many ways connecting students to “place” can inspire engaging learning experiences and community connections.
  • Recognize developmental considerations for connecting students to “place” and engaging them with place-based learning opportunities.
  • Apply insights from place attachment theory and place-based learning to the design of spaces for learning.

Smith Elementary School Replacement
Smith Join us for lunch and a presentation of Smith Elementary School. Tour to follow.

This program is a case study of the new Smith Elementary School which replaces a 50 year old campus that was constructed in many phases. See the new vision Del Valle ISD has for the future of education.

Learning Objectives:
  • Understand how the team approached designing for different learning styles to better serve students with varying needs.

2021 Construction Cost Outlook for Central Texas Schools
This program will bring together a diverse group of Contractors, Cost Estimators, and Facilities Directors to discuss the 2021 Construction Cost Outlook. The pandemic of 2020 had a significant effect on school district construction projects – all of which had safety and cost impacts for districts throughout Central Texas. As essential works, GCs and construction works continued to work while others were in lock down. During this time and the 9 months since, contractors, program managers, and district facilities representatives have learned many lessons.

This panel aims to explore the myriad of cost impacts felt during the pandemic on material sourcing, supply chain, labor, safety, scheduling, and other logistics on site. After reviewing the trends observed, we will discuss the trends predicted in order to inform more efficient, leaner, and more proactive drawings / specs to eventually afford school districts with more economic and functional value.

Learning Objectives:
  1. Identify trends for cost impacts observed during and expect as a result of the pandemic relative to material sourcing and supply chain issues.
  2. Explore the impacts of labor-related pandemic issues that affect construction cost, scheduling, and risk management, including site safety measures (social distancing & disinfection), virus infection, contract tracing, and anticipated effects of immunization.
  3. Investigate Risk Management issues for school construction projects magnified during the pandemic and explore innovative mitigation techniques for A/E teams and contractors.
  4. Compare and contrast Design Build, CMR, and CSP delivery methods with regard to cost impacts during the pandemic to advance the best value to school ISD clients
