Downtown Elementary School
2 LU/HSW
The main building is a 1925 two-level structure of 56,000 square feet (equally split between both levels) that was originally constructed as the Winston-Salem City Market building. This market was constructed as a single location where grocers from around the city could come together to sell their products. Currently, Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School system (WSFCS) utilizes approximately 36,000 square feet for educational space of this building for grades 2-5, the main administrative office for the principal of the elementary and middle school, a small multipurpose space and a café/kitchen area to serve both schools.
In 1993, a 16,000 square feet annex building was constructed to serve the Pre- Kindergarten through First Grade instruction levels.
In 2009, a 21,000 square foot, three story Middle School addition was constructed for grades 6-8. Repetition of the existing “flexible” classroom space was incorporated with this newer addition.
The campus is connected with a canopy system and has small onsite parking for staff, a 12,000 square foot hard-surface playground space for the elementary school children and a separate 4,000 square foot play space area for the Pre-K students. There is no student busing to this school. All students are parent pick-up/drop off.
Learning Objectives:
- The programming for this school requires flexible spaces and flexible thinking.
- Students in this school are adapted to open spaces with visible (and audible) influence from other classes around them.
- With the high cost of construction, coupled with the increasing availability of commercial buildings, this concept opens the mind to re-purposing space to accommodate a learning environment
- Parents of students at this school either live or work within 5 miles of the campus, making it a true “downtown” school. This environment creates a community within itself of parents with similar day to day lives.
