This brand-new middle school sits on a sloping site overlooking the Tualatin River. Deliberately nestled into the hillside to preserve existing views from the adjoining neighborhood, the building is fashioned from timeless materials that relate to the natural context and a nearby historic homestead site. The main facades utilize pre-cast concrete panels to reduce waste, increase energy efficiency, and improve installation time.

Athey Creek Middle School

The school embodies many elements of flexible learning environments that support the imagination, creativity, and wellness of the students and teachers within. The primary dining area is divided into four distinct zones to accommodate a variety of groupings and social interactions while maintaining supervision sightlines. As the “heart” of the school, the double-height library connects all five learning neighborhoods and the makerspace. Outdoor learning zones like the maker courtyard and learning courtyard are nestled by the building with views to and through them. Learning neighborhoods are oriented to allow classrooms to take advantage of the beautiful views of the river and forested hillside beyond. L-shaped “Porches” in the learning neighborhood provide student-owned spaces outside of the classroom for individual, small, and large group work. Student services are decentralized and fully inclusive with offices and other support spaces distributed throughout the building, bringing these critical services to student-owned spaces rather than adult-owned.

Learning Objectives:
  • Describe the elements of a differentiated learning environment that are designed to suit a variety of learning/teaching styles and types.
  • Discuss the coordination that is required on a challenging site relating to grading, views, equitable entry experience for all students (bus v. vehicular), cost, and safety.
  • Identify building strategies that can be used to support the unique needs of middle school grades, especially regarding the social and emotional wellness of students in this age group.
  • Compare the pro’s and con’s of insulated precast sandwich panels v. traditional framed wall envelop systems.
