North School Tour

The Podium
Building on Spokane’s longstanding reputation as a sports destination, this 135,000 sf first-in-class facility is designed with maximum flexibility to accommodate a wide variety of indoor sports and events, boosting the city’s ability to host regional, national, and international championships. Perched on a basalt outcropping above the Spokane River, construction required blasting and removal of nearly 30,000 cubic yards of rock to make way for floors, footings, and utilities. The fieldhouse roof with steel bowstring-shaped trusses clear-span 250-feet for a completely open space with clear sight lines.

The building’s marquee feature is a 200-meter banked indoor hydraulic track—the first west of the Mississippi River—convertible to a multi-sport floor for a variety of events including track and field, volleyball, basketball, judo, handball, wrestling, gymnastics, roller derby, boxing, fencing, and weightlifting. The Podium steps up to also act as a venue for local youth sports and a range of other community events including graduation ceremonies and concerts. This expanded use further benefits the Spokane community by attracting visitors beyond the sports arena.

The Podium’s dramatic site anchors an expanding sports entertainment district including Spokane Veterans Memorial Arena and soon-to-be-completed Spokane Stadium. Adjacent the newly revitalized Riverfront Park and within walking distance of downtown hotels, restaurants, and shopping it is a one-of-a-kind urban event venue with significant regional economic impact.

Learning Objectives:
  • Discover the advantages and disadvantages of the design build delivery and contracting process.
  • The participants will explore the key concepts and significance of marketing and design coordination throughout the design and construction process.
  • Identify life-safety design strategies to accommodate a flexible multi-use venue.
  • Examine the methods of delivering community safety, welfare, and energy efficient sustainable benefits to the community.

On Track Academy

Shaw Middle School
The Shaw Middle School Replacement is a new 150,000 sq ft, two story building that serves 600 students in grades Your location7-8, with the ability to accommodate up to 750 students with the addition of 6 graders. As part of the Hillyard Community Campus project, Spokane Public Library’s Hillyard Branch was integrated into the design, tripling the size of the traditional middle school library while offering the resources of the entire public library system to students. The Public Library and Shaw Middle School and library are co-located so that shared space can flex between student and public use while maintaining a line of access control that ensures the security of students. The ultimate goal was to create a campus feel while enhancing the opportunities for shared assets benefiting students, families, and the community. The learning neighborhood concept that is central to the district’s middle school pedagogy was born out of the desire to approach teaching and learning in a unique way to support the needs of the students in a familial setting while embracing the broader resources of the campus. On Track Academy offers an alternate path for high school students to excel in a hands-on curriculum. A central commons serves as the gathering and social hub of a network of classrooms, lab spaces, and a 3,000 sq ft STEM space. The 52,000 sq ft building eschews traditional high school layout by eliminating corridors and lockers in favor of open shared areas with soft seating and learning amenities available to full classes or small group discussions. The Creative Suites offer flexible spaces for earth sciences, CTE, and art; all of which can open up into the courtyard to create an interconnected network of learning.

Learning Objectives:
  • Integrating Community Resources into Educational Environments
Examine how the integration of the Spokane Public Library’s Hillyard Branch into Shaw Middle School creates a dynamic learning environment that serves both students and the community.
  • Design Strategies for Security and Flexibility
Explore the design strategies implemented to maintain a secure yet flexible environment that allows shared use between students and the public.
  • Enhancing Learning through Innovative Space Utilization
Investigate the “learning neighborhood” concept and the use of open, flexible spaces in lieu of traditional corridors and lockers, focusing on how these spaces enhance collaborative learning and social interaction.
  • Supporting At-Risk Students through Design
Evaluate how the design of Shaw Middle School and the inclusion of On Track Academy cater to the needs of at-risk students by providing alternate educational paths and hands-on curriculum opportunities.

South School Tour

Peperzak Middle School
The new Carla Peperzak Middle School is the last of the six middle schools funded by the 2018 bond and built for Spokane Public Schools. The unique site location at the edge of the Palouse challenged the design team to maximize opportunities for daylight and directed views from the learning spaces. The building massing and materials respond to the context of the surrounding farmlands with simple agrarian forms, wheat colored brick and zinc metal panel. The two-story brick massing of the classroom wings provide shelter for learning and sensory courtyards. A guiding goal of the project was to foster a sense of community giving students opportunity for expression and ownership of spaces. This goal was a main driver in the organization of the diagram with learning neighborhoods connecting to a central shared commons, giving students and teachers a variety of spaces that are easily tailored to their teaching and learning preferences.

Learning Objectives:
  • Examine the concept of learning neighborhoods and shared commons in educational facility design and analyze how these elements promote a sense of community, student ownership, and adaptable learning environments.
  • Understand the principles of maximizing natural light and directed views and the impact on student experience.
  • Analyze the benefits and challenges of implementing an open library concept in a middle school setting and the impact on student engagement, access to resources and promotion of collaborative learning.
  • Assess the role of sensory courtyards in educational environments, exploring how they contribute to student well-being, engagement, and learning experiences.

Sacajawea Middle School
The replacement of Sacajawea Middle School was designed to accommodate 825 students in grades 6-8; the project opened in the fall of 2023.

Internal circulation for the building focuses on the concept of a “town square” with all learning neighborhoods, electives, and administrative spaces organized around the learning commons and nutritional commons, which are adjacent and open to each other. The learning neighborhoods continue this theme in their organization. All classrooms open onto an open common area large enough to be used as breakout space for multiple classrooms or small group gatherings.

Learning Objectives:
  • Describe the engagement process Spokane Public Schools used across all middle schools in the district to establish a new vision and direction to meet the needs of this cohort.
  • Discuss the design guiding principles for the project, including the process through which they were developed and how they are reflected in the design.
  • Identify the strategies used and spaces created to engage students socially, academically, and emotionally.
  • Describe the design and function of the sensory courtyard, and discuss how it benefits student learning.
