Cornelius Elementary School

Located in Cornelius, Oregon, Cornelius Elementary School is a bilingual school that proudly serves a student population that is over 85% Latinx and/or Hispanic. We know students and families’ experience of space is cultural and our individual lived-experiences guide how we feel welcomed into an environment. The design team worked hand in hand with the community to create a culturally responsive and reflective outcome, one that relied on stories and lived-experiences through months of deep engagement.

The new school welcomes all visitors through a main entry plaza and one central building entry for walkers and bus riders alike. Learning spaces accommodate different group sizes and create a seamless classroom-to-activity area connection to break out into small learning clusters. The design features elements that are inspired by Latin culture, from the vibrant façade elements to the warm interior color palette. Natural daylight is always available throughout the school whether through the hallways, classrooms, or gathering spaces.

Centering the greater community on campus, the new elementary school includes a family resource center for families or students in need of a dignified space to shower, do laundry, gather household items, food, and meet with school liaisons. To encourage multi-generational family members to attend school events, an operable partition allows the cafeteria, gym, and the outdoor courtyard to become one large gathering space.

We recognize the profound impact the physical environment has on fostering a welcoming and inclusive school. The new school aims to ensure that the students and their families feel like they belong here and can together thrive as a community.

Learning Objectives:
  • Understand how to provide equitable access to social and physical care in a preK-4th grade school by allocating spaces for services such as a family resource center that includes space for coordinating social services and a food and clothing pantry.
  • Understand how community engagement feedback can inform how to forefront community spaces like the gym, cafeteria, and stage for increased access and provide room for expansion to host larger events.
  • Describe how spaces for extended learning, like hallways and outdoor spaces, increase student emotional and physical wellbeing by providing options for learning while still maintaining safety through line of sight.
  • Discuss how community feedback can inform material palette, pattern design, and interior paint colors to engrain cultural inspiration into the building design to create a sense of belonging.
