Music Additions for Evergreen High School and Union High School

The goal of these projects was to provide equitable music facilities at these two aging high schools when compared with other recently modernized District High Schools.

The Evergreen High School music room addition will be tailored to meet the specific needs of the orchestra program. Spanning 3,908 square feet, the addition includes key features such as an orchestra room, an office space, two practice rooms, a dedicated storage room, and the enclosure of an existing exterior walkway.

The Union High School music addition is designed to cater specifically to the needs of the band program. Spanning 4,500 square feet in a single-story structure, is tailored for the band program’s needs. It comprises a band classroom that could open up to the courtyard for outdoor performances, office/library, two practice rooms, percussion storage with drive-up access. The Vestibule provides for easy access to the rest of the music program and backstage facilities for the Performing Arts auditorium. The new covered breezeway maintains historical access to various wings within the campus.

Learning Objectives:

• Acoustic Design Principles: Understand the principles of acoustical design and its application in creating optimal sound environments for music education.
• Natural Daylight Integration: Explore strategies for integrating natural lighting and architectural features to enhance both the functionality and aesthetic appeal of music room additions.
• Tailored Program Design: Evaluate the unique needs and requirements of different music programs, such as orchestra and band, and develop tailored design solutions to accommodate these needs effectively.
• Integrating New Construction: Analyze the process of integrating new construction with existing structures while maintaining design coherence and contextual harmony within the school environment.
