St Helens High School
The addition and renovation of St Helens High School was driven by the need to modernize and unify an aging campus with significant security and accessibility challenges. Below are spaces that will be included in the tour:
- Start in New Cafeteria – Discuss project drivers, new secure entry and admin area, and the need for an adequately sized eating space to reduce prevalence of cliques
- New Science and Prep Room – Discuss modernized equipment, storage and prep space
- New Enclosed Building Connection – Discuss site grade, accessibility, building area and fire wall considerations
- Renovated / Relocated Media Center – Discuss media center as heart of student life and gathering
- Renovated Early Childhood CRs – Discuss major impact of aesthetic upgrades (finishes, casework)
- Modernized Culinary Arts Lab – Discuss prior home-ec style room, need for something more professional and commercial hood considerations
- New Health Occupations Classroom – Discuss new program, lead in for healthcare careers
- Renovated Typical Classroom – Discuss challenges with legacy integrated wall and ceiling system, considerations to improve acoustics and freshness of all classrooms
- Renovated / Relocated Career and Counseling Center – Discuss need for welcoming, bright and airy space, flexible gathering
Learning Objectives:
- Learn about design team’s careful planning to repurpose and reimagine existing spaces which were no longer adequate for their original purpose such as the old cafeteria, kitchen, and library.
- Creative and cost effective strategies to renovate existing classrooms and make them feel new.
- Critical accessible ramp considerations to connect existing buildings at different grade elevations.
- How to plan smart building separation strategies to minimize disruption of connected space.
