Tamarack Elementary School

Tamarack Elementary School is the latest of three new prototype schools for Hillsboro School District. The 73,700-sf building opened in 2023 for Pre-K through 6th grade students in the Reed’s Crossing neighborhood. Several primary goals drove project design including:

• Student-Centric
• Flexible
• Equitable
• Community Focused

The unique prototype approach to these schools allowed for an equitable education platform while challenging the design to be compact and perform on a variety of sites. By positioning the schools as an intersection between community and education unlocked their individual identities and can be experienced through materials, program, and graphic expression.

Specifically, Tamarack engages students and its larger community through its connection to sustainability and science programs.

Learning Objectives:

• The “Why” behind prototype designs for school districts
• Understand how prototype schools can cultivate their own identities
• Learn how spatial organization can bring community into the heart of the school
• Understand naturalness in the built environment and learn how it can be articulated graphically
