The renovation and expansion of Tumwata Middle School yielded a comprehensive middle school facility that captures the District’s collaborative spirit, increases the student capacity, and reinforces the learning objectives that will guide them into a new era of teaching and learning. To support new project-based, student-centered curriculum, the school is organized around multiple grade-specific Learning Neighborhoods that consist of one large group instruction area, two large labs, two open collaboration zones, two small project labs, and staff planning resources.
Learning Objectives:
- Explore tangible design solutions that were directly and meaningfully informed by student insight.
- Explore learning environments specifically designed to alleviate stress among middle school students and promote more equitable, collaborative student-teacher relationships.
- Explore how central and dynamic spaces empower students to exercise choice and autonomy.
- Explore how the program for a new middle school (Gardiner) was adapted to a remodel of an existing middle school.
