The Wilsonville High School Auditorium addition is a combination of new construction and renovation; the 600- seat theater and adjacent support spaces will create a new home for the high school performing arts programs and a new venue for the City of Wilsonville. The team designed the new auditorium to immerse students and audiences in the world of theater and performing arts by blurring the aesthetic boundary between front-of-house and back-of-house. Each space offers opportunities for teaching, learning, and performing to allow students, audiences, and the community to experience and celebrate the culture of the performing arts. The building site was constrained by the existing high school to the east and an existing wetland to the west, with a large heritage tree in the SW corner. These constraints resulted in a compact theater footprint; working with Listen Acoustics, the team refined the design to achieve “big-room” acoustics within a more modest overall size. The design of the space highlights the craft and culture that is part of creating performance; the design intent was to make the often hidden, back-of-house experiences that are part of creating performance more visible to the students, audiences, and communities. The tech levels and lighting positions were designed with high levels of transparency, so they are on display to audiences. The main lobby was designed to reflect the experience of being on stage with an open structure and vertical acoustic panels that mirror rigging line sets seen on stage. The circulation at the balcony level is reminiscent of the lighting catwalks inside the theater. Finally, the two lobbies provide additional locations for performance, with added infrastructure to support performance, practice, and learning.

Learning Objectives:
  • How to design performing arts spaces using a career technical education (CTE) lens.
  • How to achieve high-performance acoustics in modest size performance spaces.
  • How to provide student safety in high-risk technical environments.
  • How to expedite design and delivery of hard-to-get, specialty production equipment.
