Tour & Dinner Presentation

University Prep – ULab

Thursday, January 16, 2025
Tour: 4:30 – 5:30 pm PT
Dinner/Presentation: 6:00 – 8:00 pm PT

Parking is extremely limited on University Prep’s campus and may already be near capacity prior to the beginning of the event. Carpooling and public transit is strongly encouraged; street parking is available, and the school prefers the use of 25th Ave NE for street parking rather than clogging the neighborhood streets.

The ULab is a new academic hub designed to ignite student agency, collaboration, creativity and leadership through interdisciplinary and project-based learning. The 39,000 sf student center expands upper school learning opportunities that invite change, spark innovation and encourage socialization through community.

Distributed across the building’s three levels are agile learning environments of varied sizes with open circulation and breakout spaces—a flexible framework to support evolving teaching pedagogies and emerging curriculum for decades to come. Equipped with cutting edge technology, these dynamic spaces offer students hand-on, real-world opportunities, supporting the school’s commitment to innovation and entrepreneurship. The ULab provides students’ access to both fabrication and design facilities for class projects, co-curricular clubs, passion projects and skill-building workshops, gaining invaluable experience in design, engineering, electronics, and digital arts.

The building program features a double-height upper school commons where students study, socialize and gather as a community. Program spaces include interdisciplinary seminar-style learning spaces, makerspace, student support services, a large gathering area and meeting spaces that support student collaboration and foster community building, a multipurpose athletic/wellness studio, faculty and administrative offices, all-gender restrooms and a rooftop deck.

Human health and environmental performance are advanced through daylighting and operable windows in all learning spaces and a rooftop PV array that is part of a highly efficient, all-electric MEP system. Careful grading and native plants, including a legacy cedar tree, seamlessly connect indoor-outdoor learning environments and contribute to the holistic, functional strategy for improving student well-being.

Learning Objectives:
  • Identify architectural strategies that prioritize human health and environmental performance to enhance links between space and student engagement, excitement, learning, focus, and wellbeing.
  • Learn how a modular architectural framework can support evolving teaching pedagogies and emerging curriculum for the future.
  • Consider how space utilization and organization amplify the impact of programs offered and create a culture of innovation and adventure.
  • Discuss architectural strategies utilized to successfully embed a school in a tight, neighborhood setting around mature trees (scale modulation, breaking down mass, landscaping, recessive materials, etc.)
