Transforming Legacy Campuses: The Modernization of Brackenridge High School

AIA Pending

This guided facility tour highlights the phased modernization of Brackenridge High School, a historic campus that was transformed from a deteriorated facility into a vibrant, student centered learning environment. The tour includes renovations to the CTE facilities, main academic building, and the recently completed gymnasium and locker room additions. Participants will observe how adaptive reuse of existing structures, improved daylighting, enhanced circulation, and the introduction of collaborative and social learning spaces support contemporary educational best practices. The tour also emphasizes how culturally responsive design and strong community engagement shaped a campus that fosters identity, belonging, and pride.

  • Identify architectural strategies that improve health, safety, and welfare within the modernization of an existing K-12 educational facility, including enhanced circulation, visibility, accessibility, and collaborative learning environments.
  • Evaluate how adaptive reuse and phased renovation approaches can support sustainability goals while preserving community identity and minimizing environmental impact.
  • Recognize the role of daylighting, flexible educational spaces, and social learning environments in supporting student well being, engagement, and contemporary educational best practices.
  • Apply lessons learned from culturally responsive and community engaged school design to future educational projects that promote inclusivity, belonging, and long term campus functionality.
