What does a unified school look like, how does it function? Careful thought went into planning the new Newport High School to be a great place for learning, exploring, and collaborating. Filled with daylight, fresh air and access to nature, the new 313, 229 sf school is organized around an enclosed, centralized courtyard which encourages students to engage with the outdoor environment. Learning is on display in the new school. CTE and art spaces are showcased on the ground floors to better engage with the school and to show the creative work being done. Core classrooms are organized around flexible shared spaces and promote small group learning and overlapping instruction. Collaborative spaces are sprinkled throughout the schools circulation path and allow students and teachers to engage in a way they prefer. School pride can be felt on the interiors with subtle wayfinding devices such as varying colors, textures, and materials. Red colors are more heavily used in the athletic spaces, while yellow colors are more used in the academic spaces. When viewing the old Newport from the surrounding neighborhood, what used to be a large windowless gym caught your eye first, now the new addition is prominent. Large linear forms and material changes are used to provide subtle wayfinding to points of entry. Each of these entry points has a unique public plaza welcoming guests to the building. Distinctive red and yellow colors of Newport have been re-imagined in the exterior and complement the existing building in a subtle, refined way.

Learning Objectives:
  • Planning for multi-year phased occupied project. Expanding a school that is fully operational is like a game of chess. Which piece moves first and what pieces follow. Maintaining student life alongside multiple years of school means that some students have experienced Newport in construction more than complete, or before work started. As designers, how do we accommodate a fully operational school including extracurricular activities during all construction phases?
  • Modern CTE spaces. From utilizing spaces from the existing 1962 building, CTE spaces have been brought into the 21st century with new spaces tailored to these high-tech programs.
  • Connections to nature. Newport students thrive when given a chance to enjoy the outdoors. Our new additions provided the students with a multitude of outdoor space choices. A centralized courtyard was designed and has become the central heart of the school adjacent to the commons and main circulation of the school.
  • Unify the student body. Multiple renovations have been given to Newport over the years, each improving student life. This construction has unified student life to a new level. The entire student body is now able to congregate as one community enriching school spirit and pride, and making heartfelt connections for the future.
